The Crown reigns over Globes

The Crown was Netflix's sole drama series nominee

The Crown was Netflix’s sole drama series nominee

Netflix’s UK original series The Crown scooped the coveted Best TV Drama Series award at the Golden Globes last night.

The drama edged out fellow Netflix show Stranger Things, NBC’s This Is Us and HBO’s Game of Thrones and Westworld to win the gong at the 74th edition of the ceremony.

It’s the first time a British series has taken the prize at the Golden Globes since Upstairs Downstairs in 1971. Both series starred Dame Eileen Atkins.

The Crown’s win came moments after its star, Claire Foy, took home the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

The show, which dramatises the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II, is produced by Sony-owned UK prodco Left Bank Pictures, in association with Sony Pictures TV.

This is the first win for Netflix in the Golden Globe TV drama series category and will be even sweeter for the US SVoD services after its other series, including Bloodline, House of Cards and Narcos, failed to earn any nominations this time around.

Meanwhile, the Best TV Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television award went to FX’s The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, which hails from Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.

It was also a big night for BBC1 and AMC drama The Night Manger, with its stars Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie all picking up acting awards.
