The Crown and Ted Lasso dominate main categories at 2021 Emmy Awards

Ted Lasso took home four Emmys having begun as a promotional video for NBC Sports

Netflix historical drama The Crown and Apple TV+’s comedy Ted Lasso were the big winners at the 2021 Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles last night.

The Crown bagged seven gongs, including outstanding drama series as well as the lead and supporting acting in a drama series prizes for Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson.

Peter Morgan and Jessica Hobbs were also recognised in the writing and directing for a drama series categories respectively.

Ted Lasso won four prizes, including outstanding comedy series and lead actor in a comedy series for Jason Sudeikis, who plays the titular character in the Apple TV+ show which originated as a promotional video for NBC Sports in 2013.

Jean Smart won the award for lead actress in a comedy series for her performance in Hacks, the HBO series in which she plays a legendary Las Vegas comic.

Ted Lasso cast members Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein also won in the supporting actress and actor in a comedy series categories respectively.

Elsewhere, Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit was named outstanding limited series, while Kate Winslet won the award for lead actress in a limited series or movie for her performance in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

Other winners included RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1, which was named outstanding competition programme; Ewan McGregor, who won lead actor in a limited series or movie for his performance in the Netflix original Halston; and Michaela Coel, who won for writing for a limited series, movie or drama for I May Destroy You.

After many winners made their acceptance speeches from home during last year’s awards due to the Covid-19 pandemic, last night’s ceremony saw it return as an in-person event, broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
