Sweden’s TV4 leaves terrestrial network to invest more in streaming

Swedish free-to-air network TV4 has ceased broadcasting on terrestrial television as part of its ongoing digital transformation and increased focus on streamer TV4 Play.

As of today (January 12), TV4 will no longer be available to households that watch it for free via a TV antenna.

The broadcaster said the decision is in line with the changing media habits of the Swedish audience and TV4’s ongoing digital transformation, which sees it focusing its resources on streamer TV4 Play.

The change will affect a small percentage of the Swedish population, with the majority already watching TV4 via fibre, cable, satellite or digitally via TV4 Play.

According to a survey commissioned by TV4, around 4% of Swedish households, or approximately 196,000 households, use the terrestrial network as their only means of watching TV.

For these people, TV4 has provided information online about how to continue watching its content.

TV4, which began broadcasting via terrestrial networks in 1992 and was acquired by Norway’s Schibsted last year for US$714m, airs shows such as Idol, Farmer Wants a Wife and classic Swedish soap Skilda världar.

TV4 said: “We are aware that the change may be challenging for some groups, especially the elderly and those who are not used to technology. Therefore, we are actively working to support these viewers, both before and after terrestrial broadcasts cease. We also encourage relatives, landlords and property owners to help share information and assist those who need extra support.”

Mathias Berg, CEO of TV4 and head of scripted, said it comes as TV4 “continues to develop our business in line with how the majority of Swedish audiences take part in content today.”

“At the same time, I want to be clear about what is not changing. TV4’s content is the same as always, with a unique mix of credible journalism, strong entertainment, drama and sports. We continue to be there for the whole of Sweden and contribute to democracy, community and understanding.

“Through TV4 Play and our partners, we continue to reach the entire country while building a modern, sustainable media company.”
