Wegelius will step down from the job, which she describes as “the best and most meaningful job in Swedish media,” in September 2013.

SVT said her departure comes as the channel prepares for a “major overhaul” of its commissioning structure to merge web and broadcast content.

“When I took the position I said that no one person should have this much influence on Swedish public service television for more than six or seven years. It wasn’t an easy decision to make. But I don’t think anyone is surprised that an entrepreneurial person like me is looking for more freedom,” said Wegelius.

She did not comment on her next move.

Wegelius was previously the programming director of the first Scandinavian commercial broadcaster, TV3, and also headed her own production company, Wegelius TV, in the 1990s.

After selling her prodco to Svensk Filmindustri, Wegelius went on to create Kworld, an e-learning company that operated the first privately owned digital terrestrial broadcast channel in Sweden. She joined SVT in 2007.

Eva Hamilton, MD of SVT, said Wegelius had been “vital in building a creative and fruitful relationship with the local production market and with international format distributors and drama coproducers.”
