SVoD subscriptions in Arabic countries will more than double by 2027 – study

The number of SVoD subscriptions in Arabic-speaking countries will more than double by 2027, according to UK analysis firm Digital TV Research.

There will be 21.5 million SVoD subscriptions across 13 Arabic-speaking countries by 2027, up from 9.5 million in 2021.

Netflix will continue to be the market leader with 5.5 million subs in 2027, up from 3.6 million in 2021, followed by local streamer Shahid VIP which will grow from 2.2 million to 3.8 million in the same period.

StarzPlay will come next, with subscriber numbers increasing to 3.5 million from 2.0 million, just ahead of Disney+, which launched in the region this year and is forecast to reach 3.4 million subs by 2027.

Amazon’s Prime Video is expected to take the next spot by growing subscriber numbers to 2.3 million from 715,000 in the period, followed by OSN, whose subscriptions will rise to 1.6 million from 623,000.

Digital TV Research noted that OSN has lost some momentum after Disney+ launched in the region and withdrew its content from the platform. However, OSN will retain exclusive rights to HBO Max and Paramount+ content.

Apple TV+, meanwhile, will see subscriber numbers grow to 403,000 from 86,000, while other platforms combined will reach 1.1 million subscriptions, up from 337,000.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Netflix will continue to lead the market, although Disney+ has provided a strong challenge since June. We assume that Netflix and Disney+ will add hybrid ad-supported tiers in a pan-Arabic platform from 2024.”
