Fraser has headed the feature docs strand since its inception in 1999 and has been involved in more than 340 films over the course of his career.

His credits include media events such as WHY Democracy? and WHY Poverty, while he has been involved with documentaries that have picked up four Oscars, five Baftas, 15 Griersons, three Peabodys and three International Emmys.

The award-winning journalist, known for his work on films including Man On Wire and One Day in September, will now focus on the launch of Yaddo, a documentary streaming service that he is co-founding.

Yaddo, which launches at the end of the month in 160 territories, will feature a selection of original and newly commissioned factual films curated and hand-picked by Fraser.

Kate Townsend, executive producer at Storyville, will assume responsibility for the BBC strand in the interim.

Fraser said: “I’ve had such a fantastic time at the BBC. Creating and sustaining Storyville has been more than I could ever imagine in terms of a fulfilling career. I really do think that the BBC is the greatest broadcasting organisation in the world.

“I’m sad to go but I truly believe that nothing ever really comes to an end and I hope that I can continue to make fresh and exciting films and to work with the BBC in my new role.”

Alison Kirkham, controller of factual commissioning, added: “Nick Fraser has been an incredible leader of Storyville and the strand has built up an enviable reputation across the industry, garnering an impressive array of awards.

“The sheer range and ambition of the titles that he has been associated with demonstrates his passion for ensuring that the very best stories are brought to the screen.”

Cassian Harrison, editor of BBC4 which airs the Storyville docs, said: “Nick’s global reputation as a sponsor and supporter of the very best in documentaries is more than deserved, and the reach of his intelligence and curiosity is unending.

“We look forward to watching the fruits of his new endeavours, and he will always be a friend of the BBC.”
