Stella Blómkvist joins Sundance Now

Stella Blómkvist stars Heida Reed

AMC Networks has acquired neo-noir crime drama Stella Blómkvist for its streamer Sundance Now from distributor Red Arrow Studios International.

The 6×45′ series, based on a series of books by an author using the same name as a pseudonym, sees Heida Reed (Poldark) play a hard-nosed lawyer who takes on mysterious murder cases and goes up against the political elite.

AMC Networks has picked up the show for Sundance Now in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Stella Blómkvist is produced by Icelandic prodco Sagafilm for local broadcaster Síminn and MTG-owned streamer Viaplay.

The show was co-developed with Red Arrow Studios International, which distributes it, and has previously been sold to broadcasters including NBCUniversal’s networks in Spain and the French-speaking territories.

The acquisition comes as Síminn has recommissioned the series for a second season. When it was first broadcast, the equivalent of almost half the population of Iceland ordered the drama on Síminn’s SVoD service in the first week following its premiere.

It received more than 150,000 orders on Síminn’s service in its first week, from a population of 330,000. Additionally, 54% of all Icelandic households that have Síminn Premium (roughly a third of homes) watched the first episode over its debut weekend.

The deal with Sundance Now was brokered by Shirley Bowers, VP of sales and acquisitions for North America, Australia and New Zealand at Red Arrow Studios International.
