Starz orders Blindspotting spin-off

Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs in Blindspotting

Lionsgate-owned US cablenet Starz has greenlit a spin-off series to Lionsgate’s 2018 comedy drama film Blindspotting.

Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who wrote, produced and starred in the film, will write and exec produce the half-hour dramedy series, with Casal also serving as showrunner in addition to having a recurring role.

The film follows parolee Collin (Diggs) who has three days left on his sentence, only to witness a police shooting that threatens to ruin a lifelong friendship with Miles (Casal).

The series will centre on Miles’ wife Ashley, with Jasmine Cephas Jones reprising her role from the film, as she battles through an existential crisis following the incarceration of Miles and their son.

Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder, co-founders of Snoot Entertainment, will reunite with Casal and Diggs as exec producers, alongside Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee and Tim Palen of Barnyard Projects. Lionsgate Television is producing for Starz.

“Rafael, Daveed and Jasmine created a beautiful film that we believe will translate perfectly into a compelling series for Starz,” said Christina Davis, president of original programming at Starz.

“This provocative and powerful narrative couldn’t be more timely, and in picking up the story from Ashley’s perspective, we will be able to shine a light on so many of the important social issues that the characters and the audience continue to grapple with.”
