Starz gets a taste for Sweetbitter

US cablenet Starz has greenlit a half-hour scripted drama series based on the novel Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler.

The 6×30′ series will share the same name as the novel, which follows a 22-year-old woman who is introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars and fine dining while working at a celebrated New York restaurant.

Starz holds global distribution rights to the show, which will be produced with Plan B Entertainment.

“Stephanie’s smart, sensory and genuine storytelling is set in the world of high-end dining, fuelled by too much debauchery, drugs and French wine,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht.

Danler has written the script for the first episode and Stu Zicherman (The Americans) will join the author in penning the rest of the season, with both serving as executive producers.

Donna Bloom will serve as producer, while Starz senior VP of original programming Ken Segna, VP of original programming Patrick McDonald and senior coordinator of original programming Samantha Offsay are also on board. Laura Rosenthal is leading the ongoing casting process.
