SPTI invests in new UK indie

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) has taken an equity stake in Gogglebox Entertainment, the UK indie recently set up by former Lion TV execs Mat Steiner and Adam Wood.

The company, based in London, will focus on the creation and production of entertainment and factual entertainment formats for the UK.

In addition to making a minority investment in the new company, SPTI will obtain the international distribution rights to formats created by Gogglebox for TV and other platforms.

The investment by Sony is one of a number of recent initiatives either completed or in progress, to further enhance its position in the light entertainment sector. Earlier this month the company agreed to acquire Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? owner 2waytraffic for £114.3m (US$230.5m).

Steiner and Wood are former executives of Lion TV where Wood was head of entertainment and Steiner was head of creative. Whilst at Lion, they devised a number of formats including Cash Cab, Playing It Straight, Let Me Entertain You, The Big Day, To Catch A Thief and Mum’s On Strike. Many of their formats went on to be produced by Lion in the USA and are currently broadcasting in over 40 territories.

SPTI senior VP of European production Antony Root said: “As we expand our non-scripted business in Europe, we are delighted to invest in Mat and Adam’s new company. We look forward to working closely with them to establish Gogglebox as a premier, independent UK entertainment producer.”
