US streamer Spectrum and AMC Networks have commissioned a psychological science fiction thriller series based on Hugh Howey’s novel Beacon 23.

Created for TV by Zak Penn and coproduced by Spectrum Originals and Boat Rocker’s Platform One Media, Beacon 23 is set in the darkest recesses of space where two people are trapped in a lighthouse at the end of the known universe.

The series will run for nine months exclusively on Spectrum, with a second window across AMC Networks’ channels and platforms.

Penn will also serve as showrunner and exec producer. Joining him as exec producers are Ira Steven Behr and Platform One CEO Katie O’Connell Marsh and chief creative officer Elisa Ellis.

“Beacon 23 is a series in a class of its own – it’s a thriller, it’s a love story, it’s a character drama, it’s a sci-fi exploration of our own interconnectivity and disconnection, and it’s been beautifully adapted by the brilliant Zak Penn,” said Katherine Pope, head of Spectrum Originals.
