Spanish cocaine thriller Operación Marea Negra scores deals with Roku, SBS, AMC

Operación Marea Negra is produced by Ficción Producciones

Spanish-language thriller Operación Marea Negra has been acquired by broadcasters and platforms in more than 60 markets, including The Roku Channel (US and Mexico), SBS (Australia) and AMC Networks International (Latin America).

The four-part series, which is sold internationally by Hasbro-owned Entertainment One (eOne), was also picked up by Telus (Canada), TV+ (Turkey), Ziggo (the Netherlands), TVNZ (New Zealand) and Fox (Spain).

Produced by Spanish prodco Ficción Producciones (3 Roads, Unauthorised Living), the Amazon Prime Video original is inspired by real events and follows three companions as they attempt to cross the Atlantic in a homemade sub carrying more than 3,000 kilos of cocaine. Production recently wrapped on the second season.

The first season stars Álex González (3 Caminos) as an ex-boxer who turns to trafficking when he runs out of other means of income. The cast also includes Nerea Barros (La Isla Mínima), Nuno Lopes (White Lines), Miquel Insua (La Unidad), Luis Zahera (El Reino), Xosé Barato (Alba) and Carles Francino (Cable Girls), among others.

It is directed by Daniel Calparsoro, Oskar Santos and João Maia. Mamen Quintas and Julio Casal serve as executive producers together with Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes (El Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Gaza, Mon Amour). The coproducers are Spain’s Forta and Portugal’s RTP.

EOne is selling the series at Mipcom in Cannes next week, as well as a companion docuseries titled Operación Marea Negra: The Suicidal Mission. The four-part documentary explores the journey of the first narco semi-submersible that reached the shores of Europe. It has already been licensed to The Roku Channel (US), SBS (Australia), Ziggo (Netherlands) and Telus (Canada).
