Spain’s Clan teams with Imira, Toonz of India to coproduce animation Sunnyside Billy

Animated comedy series Sunnyside Billy

Spanish kidcaster Clan has teamed with Barcelona-based Imira Entertainment to coproduce new 2D animated comedy series Sunnyside Billy.

The 52×11’ series, described as “an upbeat action-packed comedy about a friendly fried egg”, is an original production of Imira’s India-based parent company Toonz Media Group and was developed by a team led by French animator Olivier Jean-Marie (Oggy & the Cockroaches, Zig & Sharko), who died in May.

Aimed at seven-year-olds and older, the show follows fried egg Billy and his friends who are on a mission to protect mythical Big Fish from the prying eyes of greedy Tooth. The series celebrates friendship, positivity and the environment, said Toonz.

The production team includes Belgian creator Jan Van Rijsselberge (Robot Boy, Dude That’s My Ghost!), who was part of the original creative team along with Jean-Marie. Toonz CEO P Jayakumar and Imira CEO Carlos Biern serve as executive producers of the show.

Sunnyside Billy is being developed and produced at Imira’s production facilities in Spain. Post-production works will be done at Toonz’s Irish subsidiary studio Telegael and the show is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2023.

Yago Fandiño, head of content for children at Clan’s pubcaster parent TVE, described the series as “a funny, original series that brings together the legacy of Olivier’s irreverent and zany humour with a new generation of Spanish creators.”

Previous coproductions between Clan and Toonz in Spain include Sandra the Fairy Tale Detective and Bat Pat, while the Indian studio is also in production on Paddypaws & Pals in partnership with Bob the Builder creator Keith Chapman, and JG & the BC Kids with American actress Janet Hubert.
