Spain’s Atresmedia acquires format rights to Beta’s Italian drama series The Sea Beyond

The Sea Beyond (aka Mare Fuori) is distributed globally by Germany’s Beta Film

Spanish broadcast group Atresmedia, which owns Antena 3 and laSexta, has acquired the rights to adapt the Italian drama series The Sea Beyond for its own market.

Known in Italy as Mare Fuori, the series is produced by Rai TV in collaboration with Picomedia and it aired in Italy on Rai 2 and Rai Play. It is distributed globally by Germany’s Beta Film.

The Sea Beyond tells the story of young people imprisoned in a penitentiary for minors on an island off Naples. In Italy, it was originally released in 2020 and already has three seasons of 12 episodes each.

Its fourth season is scheduled to premiere soon and it has already been renewed for a fifth and a sixth instalment.

The news of the purchase of the remake rights by Atresmedia was first reported in Spain by the Bluper news portal and confirmed by C21’s sister publication Cveintiuno.

Atresmedia said although the purchase of the remake rights is official, the production of the local adaptation has not yet been confirmed.

The Sea Beyond has already been sold into more than 20 international territories by Beta Film, including Sweden (TV4), Germany (Disney+), Israel (Hot) and Latin America (HBO Max). In addition to Spain, negotiations for a local adaptation are underway in France, according to Beta.
