Space Entertainment Enterprise to launch space-set studio in 2024

The studio will be connected to the International Space Station

Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), the UK-based media company developing multiplatform, space-based entertainment, has unveiled plans for the world’s first content studio in space.

SEE-1, which is set to launch in late 2024 and will connect to the International Space Station (ISS), will allow artists, producers and creatives to develop, produce, record and live-stream content that maximises the ISS’s low-orbit micro-gravity environment, including films, television, music and sports events.

In addition to SEE-produced events, the space studio will provide the venue and production infrastructure for hosting and filming third-party content and events.

The entertainment studio and multipurpose arena will be built by US space infrastructure developer Axiom Space, which holds a contract with NASA to develop a spacecraft. It will dock with Axiom’s commercial space station while it is connected to the ISS.

SEE was co-founded by Elena Lesnevsky and Dmitry Lesnevsky, former co-founder, CEO and general producer of Russian linear channel Ren-TV, in 2021. The firm focuses on producing multiplatform space-based entertainment, music and sports.

The company has already made major hires, including appointing ex-Endemol Shine UK CEO Richard Johnston as chief operating officer. Mark Taffet, the former senior VP of sports and pay per view at HBO, and ex-Viacom technology VP Remi Abayomi have also been hired.

Johnston said: “From Jules Verne to Star Trek, science-fiction entertainment has inspired millions of people around the world to dream about what the future might bring. Creating a next-generation entertainment venue in space opens countless doors to create incredible new content and make these dreams a reality.”

In a joint statement, SEE co-founders Dmitry and Elena Lesnevsky added: “SEE-1 is an incredible opportunity for humanity to move into a different realm and start an exciting new chapter in space. It will provide a unique and accessible home for boundless entertainment possibilities in a venue packed with innovative infrastructure that will unleash a new world of creativity.

“With worldwide leader Axiom Space building this cutting-edge, revolutionary facility, SEE-1 will provide not only the first but also a supreme-quality space structure enabling the expansion of the two trillion-dollar global entertainment industry into low-Earth orbit.”
