The eight-parter is set in England’s Lake District and follows Neve Kelly, who discovers she has been murdered and is determined to find her killer and get justice, believing it was someone she knew.

It is the first series produced entirely in-house by Sky Studios, Sky’s production and development arm, and will be directed by Ed Lilly (Industry), with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches) sharing exec producer duties with Stevens (The Missing)

The Rising will be available on Sky1 in the UK, Ireland, Italy and Germany next year, while it will also be on streamer Now in the UK, Ireland and Italy, as well as Sky Ticket devices in Germany, Sky X in Austria and Sky Shows in Switzerland.

Filming is due to start in the Lake District next month, with emerging actors Clara Rugaard (I Am Mother), Nenda Neururer (A Brief History of Struggle) and Solly McLeod (Boxing Day) among the cast.

International sales for The Rising will be handled by NBCUniversal Global Distribution on behalf of Sky Studios.

Zai Bennett, Sky’s MD of content, said: “The Rising is a really fresh take on an atmospheric thriller and I’m hugely excited to bring this story to Sky, complete with a great line up of young, emerging talent. The story of Neve takes audiences on a journey from mystery, suspense and horror, all set to the stunning scenic backdrop of the Lake District.”

The series is an adaptation of 2017 Belgian crime thriller Hotel Beau Séjour, which was produced by De Mensen for Een.

The original Flemish version was also sold to other territories such as France (Arte), Germany (Arte), The Netherlands (NPO) and was one of the first Belgian series to close a worldwide deal with Netflix with Lagardère Studios Distribution handling international distribution rights.
