Sky Studios links with prodco pair

Sky’s Agatha Raisin is produced by Free@Last

Sky Studios, the production arm of European satcaster Sky, has agreed development and distribution deals with indie prodcos Free@Last TV in the UK and Iceland’s Sagafilm.

The multi-year deals will see Sky Studios’ commercial team work with the prodcos to co-develop scripted series.

NBCUniversal Global Distribution will handle international sales on the resulting projects after absorbing Sky distribution arm Sky Vision earlier this month, following parent company Comcast’s acquisition of Sky last year.

Free@Last TV is best known for crime drama Agatha Raisin, which has aired on Sky1 since 2014.

Sagafilm, meanwhile, has been producing scripted, non-scripted, documentary and factual programming in the Nordic region for more than 40 years.

The deals follow Sky Studios’ commitment to double its investment in original content as it aims to become a leading TV producer across the UK and Europe.

“We are proud to have completed this development agreement with Sky Studios,” said Hilmar Sigurdsson, CEO at Sagafilm. “It shows the strength of our development department and is a sound confirmation that our strategies to bring stories to the international market is working.

“We look forward to delivering exciting new TV series under this agreement with such a renowned partner as Sky Studios.”

Sky Studios was founded back in June to aid the satcaster’s aim of doubling its original production output. Led by CEO Gary Davey and chief commercial officer Jane Millichip, the fledgling operation acquired its first prodco stake, in natural history outfit True To Nature, in August.
