UK pay TV broadcaster Sky and Disney-owned US streamer Hulu are pairing to coproduce a true crime feature documentary on a man whose defence to murder was that he was asleep when he committed the crime.

Deep Asleep (working title) will launch on Sky Crime in the UK and Hulu in the US at the end of 2021 and is being produced by London-based indie Pulse Films.

The 1×90’ doc examines whether Florida man Randy Herman Jr really committed a brutal murder in his sleep, or whether that was a convenient cover story.

Pulse Films has secured exclusive access to Herman and his family, the defence and prosecution attorneys, journalists who covered the case, forensic psychiatrists and world experts in violent parasomnia (aka sleep-walking).

The doc is directed by Skye Borgman, who is behind the critically acclaimed documentary Abducted In Plain Sight and recently worked with Pulse on its Oxygen special The Case Died With Her. Pulse Films executive producers include Marisa Clifford, Nelesh Dhand and Sunshine Jackson.

The film was commissioned for Sky Crime by Poppy Dixon, director of documentaries and factual; Emily-Jayne Wilde, programming lead at Sky Crime and Sky Witness; and Jack Oliver, head of coproductions. Oliver and Dixon will also serve as executive producers.
