Sky/Banijay Productions Germany

Sky Deutschland has commissioned a documentary about former German football star Rudi Völler from Banijay Productions Germany.

Rudi Völler: The Documentary will launch this fall and will look at how the current sporting director for the German men’s national team has shaped the country’s football scene for over five decades.

The documentary, which will also be available on Sky streaming service Wow, will feature Völler himself as well as German football figures such as Lothar Matthäus, Oliver Kahn and Julian Nagelsmann.

It comes as part of Banijay Entertainment’s growing efforts in sport following the launch of Banijay Sports.

Nico Gammella, executive producer at Sky Deutschland, said: “Rudi Völler is one of the greatest personalities in German football. With his charisma and achievements as a player, coach and official, he’s inspired fans for decades.

“The film offers rare insights into his unique career – from his beginnings at Kickers Offenbach, to winning the 1990 World Cup, and now as sporting director of the men’s national team. Fans will also get a glimpse of his personal life off-pitch, exclusively on Sky and Wow.”

Arno Schneppenheim, MD of Banijay Productions Germany, added: “Following the success of our emotional documentary about Christoph Daum – the brilliant manager whose career was shaped by triumph and scandal – our next film with Sky spotlights Rudi Völler, who began his incomparable career as a 17-year-old.

“With never-before-seen archive footage, the documentary is a feast for football romantics, and anyone curious to learn a completely different, more personal side of one Germany’s most popular figures, who at 65 remains prolific.”
