Sky D makes Magnificent acquisition

Beta Film’s Medici: The Magnificent is set 20 years after Medici: Masters of Florence

Sky Deutschland has become the latest broadcaster to acquire Renaissance drama Medici: The Magnificent from Germany’s Beta Film.

The series stars Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) alongside Daniel Sharman (Fear the Walking Dead) and will begin airing on Sky1 in Germany on December 24.

Other European broadcasters to have acquired the series include Canal+ in Poland and Czech TV, while it is available exclusively in the US on Netflix.

Created by Frank Spotnitz (The Man in the High Castle, The X-Files) and directed by Jon Cassar (24) and Jan Michelini (Un passo dal cielo), the series is set in Florence, Italy, in 1469 during a period of political and cultural upheaval.

It is set 20 years after the conclusion of the first Medici series, Medici: Masters of Florence, which debuted in October 2016.

Medici: The Magnificent is an international coproduction between Lux Vide in collaboration with Rai Fiction, Altice Group and Big Light. Beta handles worldwide sales and a second season is currently in production.
