Sky backs script editor scheme

SharpFutures head of production Elli Metcalfe

European satcaster Sky’s development and production arm, Sky Studios, is supporting a new trainee script editor scheme for aspiring off-screen talent from the North West of England, launched by social enterprise SharpFutures.

Flip The Script wants to provide access to careers in the creative sector in a region that is underrepresented in the UK industry by offering 12 paid placements to people based in the North West and aged over 18.

The placements, which start in May, will take place over 12 weeks and will include masterclasses from executive producer Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley, It’s A Sin) and writers Paul Abbott (Shameless, No Offence) and Furquan Akhtar (The Bay).

By the end of the programme, it is hoped the trainees will have acquired the skills for positions as researchers, script editors, assistant story editors and dramaturges in the future.

The programme has also been backed by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen sector. Online applications are now open via the SharpFutures website and will close on April 9.

Elli Metcalfe, head of production at SharpFutures, said: “We know that there is an industry demand for script editors and associated roles so are really pleased to be working with our partners at Sky on this programme targeted at finding and developing talent in the North West.

“This is a great opportunity for a new generation of script professionals to get practical experience and hone their skills in a way that will be of wider benefit to our thriving industry.”
