Transatlantic production studio Sister has signed a multi-year deal with the writer-director pairing of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, creators of Netflix’s The OA and FX’s A Murder at the End of the World.

Through the deal, which is described as a “creative partnership,” Marling and Batmanglij will work with Sister to develop, write and produce TV and film projects across all genres.

Marling and Batmanglij are the creators of Netflix’s genre-bending drama The OA and FX’s limited psychological drama A Murder at the End of the World. The latter series also starred Marling, alongside Emma Corrin, Harris Dickinson and Clive Owen.

They also previously collaborated on the feature film Sound of My Voice, which was produced by Marling and directed by Batmanglij, and co-wrote the 2013 feature The East, starring Elliot Page, Alexander Skarsgard and Marling.

The pact with Marling and Batmanglij comes after Sister last month announced a first-look deal with Animal Pictures, the US prodco led by actress and writer Natasha Lyonne.

Former Netflix content boss Cindy Holland, who joined Sister as CEO last summer, said Marling and Batmanglij are “wildly imaginative, ambitious and deeply thoughtful partners.”

Marling added: “Cindy Holland has been behind some of the most radical narrative leaps in the business, which we witnessed first-hand at Netflix.

“With the arrival of algorithmic storytelling – both in the programming directives and the authorship of the stories themselves – it’s more important than ever for outside-the-box thinkers to band together and make innovative, original works that looks forward rather than backwards.”
