Showtime grabs Greenfield’s Kingmaker

US cablenet Showtime has acquired a documentary from the Emmy-winning filmmaker behind The Queen of Versailles.

Lauren Greenfield’s The Kingmaker focuses on former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos, exploring the Marcos family’s history of corruption, extravagance and brutality in the country.

The doc will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this month ahead of being screened at various other festivals. A theatrical release will follow this autumn, with The Kingmaker getting its global TV premiere on Showtime in early 2020.

Written and directed by Greenfield, who won an Emmy in 2015 for TV commercial #likeagirl, is produced by Frank Evers from Evergreen Pictures.

Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, RJ Cutler, Geralyn Dreyfous, Bill Haney, Lilly Hartley, Patricia Lambrecht, Nion McEvoy, Regina K Scully, Jeffrey Tarrant and Jamie Wolf all serve as executive producers.
