London-based prodco Harry King Television (HKT) is developing a Sherlock Holmes origins drama series called True Sherlock, featuring Bridgerton star Olli Higginson in the role of the young detective.

The first four feature-length episodes are in pre-production, with shooting scheduled to begin in 2026.

True Sherlock is based on HKT founder and CEO Nicholas Sercombe’s own book series The Unexpurgated Adventure of Sherlock Holmes, which explore the back story of Holmes, his crime-solving partner Watson and their nemesis Professor Moriarty, to be played by Will Kemp (El Turco).

In the first episode, A Balls-Up in Bohemia, Holmes embarks on an adventure for a royal client while Watson tries to extricate himself from an embarrassing marriage.

Nicholas Sercombe is the showrunner, with Nigel Wooll, Mark Sandell and Jon Turtle serving as producers alongside Sercombe. A commissioning broadcaster or platform has yet to be announced.

HKT says that the project reflects its growing slate of scripted IP for television, following the launch of its unscripted division earlier this year.

Sercombe, CEO, HKT, said: “The stories are ripe for re-discovery and True Sherlock is the perfect opportunity to re-engage audiences.

“With plenty of action, humour and romance we are delighted to deliver these new adaptations played by a talented young cast. More news to come soon – this case is wide open!”
