Spain’s Secuoya Studios has struck a creative alliance with US filmmaker Chris Moukarbel’s Permanent Wave Productions to produce documentary films and unscripted content.

The partnership includes a first-look deal to jointly develop original and exclusive projects for global streamers and international broadcasters.

Moukarbel is known for exploring digital culture, contemporary fame and new ways of storytelling through his documentaries. His credits include Netflix’s Lady Gaga doc Gaga: Five Foot Two, the feature about Chris Crocker Me @ the Zoo, and Tribeca winner Cypher, which focuses on rap culture.

For Secuoya Studios, the deal is part of its global expansion strategy built around what it calls “creative pods.” Over the past year the company has signed international partnerships with BlackBox Multimedia (UK), Sydney Gallonde (France), 3Pas Studios (Mexico) and Act4 (Iceland).

“Chris’s perspective represents what we value most: powerful, contemporary storytelling, connected to the real world, and with an unmistakable creative identity. His addition strengthens our commitment to unique, ambitious and global content,” said Brendan Fitzgerald, CEO of Secuoya Studios.

“I found a really special creative partner in Secuoya. They are visionary and singular in their commitment to making things that shift the conversation,” added Moukarbel.

“From the moment I met Chris at Secuoya Studios’ Los Angeles office, I knew he was a truly original voice, one that would strengthen our bridge between Hollywood and Spain,” said James Costos, president of Secuoya Studios.

With the deal, Secuoya aims to expand its catalogue of documentaries “with high cultural and creative value,” defined by “thematic diversity, narrative rigour and artistic vision.”
