Schell, Chernin launch unscripted prodco

Former ESPN exec Connor Schell is launching an unscripted production company with Peter Chernin’s Chernin Entertainment.

The unnamed prodco, which will be led by Schell, aims to produce “high-quality, culturally relevant” non-fiction programmes, both inside and outside of the sports world, according to Chernin Entertainment, with which it has agreed a first-look deal.

Schell, Chernin and Chernin Group co-founder Jesse Jacobs will sit on the new prodco’s board of directors.

Chernin said: “Connor is by far one of the most prolific and talented producers of non-fiction storytelling and brings us a track record and instinct for creating culturally resonant and commercially viable content at a time when demand is high and supply is low.

“The opportunities to make a difference and reach audiences with important stories are endless.”

Schell was Disney-owned sports network ESPN’s exec VP of content until late last year when it was revealed he would depart the company in order to set up his own indie.

He had worked at ESPN since 2004, overseeing sports documentaries like OJ: Made in America and Chicago Bulls docuseries The Last Dance.
