SBS order First Nations health docuseries Our Medicine from Karla Hart and Periscope

Australian multi-cultural broadcaster SBS has commissioned Indigenous-focused health documentary series Our Medicine from Karla Hart Enterprises and Periscope Pictures.

The six-part observational doc series, narrated by Leah Purcell, explores First Nations healthcare, with a rare insight into ancient healing practices in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

The series’ creators were given unique access to First Nations doctors, nurses, paramedics, traditional healers and other healthcare professionals around the country.

Our Medicine series directors Hart and Kimberley Benjamin said: “These professionals are doing life-changing work in their fields of expertise, using their knowledge of culture, language and kinship to create better outcomes, safer spaces and to encourage our people not to fear the health system, which is saving lives by closing in on the catastrophic gaps in health and improving life outcomes for First Nations peoples.”

The series attracted production funding from Screen Australia’s First Nations Department and National Indigenous Television (NITV) and has been financed with support from Screenwest, Lotterywest and the WA Regional Screen Fund.

The series will screen on SBS, SBS On Demand and NITV in May.
