SBS has designs on Real Humans

MIPTV: Australian pubcaster SBS has become the first international network to secure rights to Swedish drama Real Humans (10×60′), as part of a package of shows picked up from Shine International.

Shine picked up sales rights to the series in November last year, while Kudos Film & Television, part of the Shine Group, is developing a UK remake.

Real Humans is set in a parallel time where robots, known as hu-bots, have become so human it is almost impossible to tell them apart from people. The series is being launched to the international market here at MipTV in Cannes, as part of Shine’s catalogue of drama series.

It is one of several programmes SBS has acquired from Shine, with the broadcaster also picking up a slate of factual series including the US versions of One Born Every Minute and History Cold Case, alongside UK series 24 Hours in A&E.

Jane Roscoe, network programmer at SBS, described Real Humans as “an exceptional piece of television drama. “Truly original in its concept, brilliantly written and performed, every scene of Real Humans is packed with action, danger and emotion.”

One Born Every Minute USA airs on US cablenet Lifetime and is based on the format produced by Dragonfly Film & Television for UK terrestrial Channel 4 in the UK. In France, a second season of the show is currently in production for TF1.

History Cold Case, which investigates the lives of humans based upon their skeletons, was commissioned by National Geographic in the US and is based on a BBC2 series, both produced by Shine TV. 24 Hours in A&E, produced by The Garden Productions for Channel 4, is filmed inside London’s largest accident and emergency unit.
