SBS bags Fremantle drama package

Euston Films drama Dublin Murders

MIPCOM: Australian public broadcaster SBS has inked an exclusive content deal with production and distribution giant Fremantle.

The agreement will see SBS air drama series including Dublin Murders, Baghdad Central, Face to Face, Seizure, The Last Wave and Attaché.

Psychological thriller Dublin Murders (8×60’), which debuted on BBC1 this week, is adapted from the first two titles in Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad crime novel series and is produced by Fremantle-owned Euston Films. Baghdad Central (6×60’), based on the novel by Elliott Colla, is also produced by Euston.

Face to Face (8×30’), from Danish director Christoffer Boe, and Seizure (8×60’), which follows two troubled detectives as they take on the biggest case of their lives, both come from Fremantle-owned Scandi firm Miso Film.

The Last Wave (6×60’), meanwhile, is produced by Fremantle-owned prodco Kwai, while The Attaché (5×60’) is from Israeli’s Abot Hameiri. The latter tells the story of an Israeli Jew of Moroccan descent whose life is thrown into turmoil when his wife gets the job opportunity of a lifetime as an attaché to the Israeli embassy in Paris. The SBS deal marks its first international pick-up.

Other titles in the package include American Gods, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel; Exit (6×60’), a contemporary Norwegian drama inspired by the true story of four real-life investors in Oslo; Darkness: Those Who Kill (8×60’), from Miso Film; and documentary series Expedition with Steve Backshall (10×60’), from Wendy Darke’s natural history prodco company True to Nature.

In related news, Brazilian prodco Mixer Films has signed a partnership with Fremantle, with the former representing Fremantle’s unscripted formats in Brazil.

Mixer Films has produced content including adverts, feature films, documentaries, reality shows and drama series for companies including Netflix, HBO, Discovery, UFC, Warner TV, Fox Brazil and Globo.

The agreement with Mixer is part of a wider Fremantle strategy to increase its activity in Latin America, which has seen Coty Cagliolo, previously head of Fremantle Mexico, promoted to the newly created role of head of production for Fremantle in Latin America.

Reporting to Fremantle group chief operating officer Andrea Scrosati, Cagliolo will continue to lead Fremantle Mexico in addition to her new wider role across the region.
