S4C’s Dal y Mellt becomes first Welsh-language drama to stream on Netflix

Netflix has picked up its first Welsh-language drama, Dal y Mellt (Rough Cut), from Welsh pubcaster S4C.

The deal was done by the show’s distributor Abacus Media Rights, with Netflix set to air it in the UK from April.

Made by London prodco Vox Pictures, Dal y Mellt was originally released last year as a box set on streaming platforms S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer.

The six-part series is an adaptation of Iwan “Iwcs” Roberts’s first novel of the same name – a contemporary thriller about troubled character Carbo, played by Gwïon Morris Jones, as he is drawn into a world of wrongdoing.

“This is fantastic news for Welsh-language drama,” said Sian Doyle, S4C’s chief executive officer. “The popularity of international dramas on Netflix proves there is an appetite for exciting quality drama regardless of language.”

In other news, Netflix in the US has ordered two additional seasons of Selling the OC, the spin-off of real-estate series Selling Sunset.

Produced by Done and Done Productions and Lionsgate, the show has been renewed for a second and third season, with production set to begin this winter. The series follows a new set of realtors as they compete to establish themselves at The Oppenheim Group’s second office in Orange County.
