Ryan Murphy leaving Netflix when overall deal ends, set to sign with Disney

Super-producer Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story) is set to leave US-based streamer Netflix, where he has been under a lucrative overall deal for the past five years, and is in talks to move to a deal with Disney.

If a deal with Disney comes to fruition, it would see him reunite with Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, after the pair previously collaborated when Murphy had a deal with 20th Century Fox Television, previously led by Walden. Bloomberg first broke the news.

Murphy’s output under his Netflix deal has gathered momentum following a quiet start. Early projects produced under the deal included comedy drama The Politician and psychological thriller Ratched, while The Watcher and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, both bona fide Netflix hits, have been released over the past year. He is expected to continue producing both The Watcher and Monster for Netflix after his deal officially concludes at the end of the month.

Murphy’s overall deal with Netflix turned heads in February 2018 due to the whopping reported price tag of US$300m. Under the deal, which officially commenced on July 1, 2018, Murphy produced new series and films exclusively for the SVoD service through his Ryan Murphy Productions banner.

A move to Disney would also see Murphy under the same umbrella as FX chief John Landgraf, who he also worked with closely while producing series including American Horror Story and American Crime Story.
