RubyRock, Forté develop scripted gangster series based on the Fewtrells

Accidental gangsters Eddie and Hazel Fewtrell

London-based prodco RubyRock Pictures and Toronto-based Forté Entertainment are teaming up to develop a scripted TV series based on David Keogh’s non-fiction book series The Accidental Gangster, about the notorious Fewtrell family.

Set in the 1960s and unfolding over four decades, Accidental Gangsters charts the rise of the family, headed up by Eddie and Hazel Fewtrell, who rose to fame with their nightclub empire in Birmingham, England.

Declan O’Dwyer (Miss Scarlett and the Duke, Flowers in the Attic: The Origin) is attached to write and direct the project, described as a “visceral and compulsively addictive crime drama inspired by true events.”

Forté Entertainment heads Andrea and Mitch Garbourie, who optioned the book initially, are executive producing alongside RubyRock’s Zoë Rocha and Robbie von Werz. Mitch Powell of Second City Productions and Catherine Freeman of RubyRock Pictures are also producing.

Abi Fewtrell, daughter of Eddie and Hazel Fewtrell, said: “My father, Eddie Fewtrell, famously ran Birmingham with an iron fist. However, few people know that my mother played a vital role in the success of his empire.

“If my dad was the muscle, my mom was the brains. After the sad passing of my father earlier this year, I can think of no better tribute than their true story finally being told.”

This is the latest scripted project from Forté Entertainment after The Quest for Disney+. RubyRock’s credits include Flowers in the Attic: The Origin for Lifetime.
