RTL’s constructed Families travel to Chile

Families at the Crossroads was produced for RTL by Filmpool

Chilean broadcaster TVN has picked up a German format that uses dramatic recreations of true events to tell stories of self-discovery through the eyes of female heroes.

Families at the Crossroads was first produced for RTL in Germany by All3Media’s sister company Filmpool and is being remade in Chile by local producer Bowen DDRio. All3Media International distributes the format globally.

Each episode focuses on stories taken from true everyday events that are “recreated in a dramatised form of heightened reality that emphasises the emotional aspect of the incident and highlights the heroes and happy endings.”

TVN has picked up 60 scripts for adaptation, with the series, which is shot in the style of a documentary, set to launch later this year. The deal is the first commission outside Central and Eastern Europe for Filmpool’s portfolio of constructed reality titles, which include Day & Night, Cases of Doubt and Just Help Me!.

Families at the Crossroads has already been adapted in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, with more than 2,500 episodes produced worldwide.

Janel Downing, VP of Latin American sales at All3Media International, said the constructed reality genre’s “specialised style of writing and production delivers heightened emotions and dramatic turning points that viewers can really relate to.”
