Romulus to premiere on C21Screenings

Romulus tells the epic tale of the birth of ancient Rome

Sky Italia’s upcoming epic drama Romulus will have its world premiere on C21 Digital Screenings on September 14, in partnership with its international distributor, ITV Studios.

Romulus is the story of the founding of Rome, from one of Italy’s most important directors, Matteo Rovere (Italian Race, The First King), in his debut as a TV director.

A Preview Show will also be available ahead of the premiere, featuring Marco Chimenz, co-CEO of producer Cattleya, and commissioning broadcaster Sky Italia’s senior director original production, Nils Hartmann.

Produced by Sky, Cattleya (Gomorrah, Suburra, ZeroZeroZero) – part of ITV Studios – and Groenlandia, Romulus is a hyper-realistic, ambitious drama that meticulously reconstructs the epic tale of the genesis of Rome, as never told before.

In the eighth century BC, along the banks of the Tiber, a primitive and brutal world exists, where a man’s fate is decided by the merciless power of nature and the gods.

The drama is produced by Sky, Cattleya and Groenlandia

Filmed in archaic Latin, Romulus is the story of this world as seen through the eyes of three people marked by death, loneliness and violence: Yemos, Wiros and the young vestal Ilia.

As these men and women learn how to shape their own destinies instead of passively suffering the whims of fate, a ferocious and protective female figure leads the formation of a new society, laying the foundations for one of the greatest empires ever.

The cast includes Andrea Arcangeli (The Startup, Trust), Marianna Fontana (Indivisible, Capri-Revolution) and Francesco Di Napoli (Piranhas) – young and acclaimed talent starring in a story of survival directed by Rovere, Michele Alhaique (Non Uccidere, Senza Nessuna Pietà) and Enrico Maria Artale (The Third Half, Sanctuary).

Two entire cities were meticulously reconstructed on the basis of extensive historical research for the series, which features thousands of extras, more than 700 stunt people and hundreds of authentic, specially manufactured weapons.

Ruth Berry

Ruth Berry, MD of global distribution at ITV Studios, said: “I’m delighted that we are able to share the World Premiere of Romulus with subscribers to C21 Screenings’ new Digital Premieres Season. It’s a brilliantly executed, unique drama, tackling the epic founding of one of the world’s most powerful empires. Despite its archaic language and setting, Romulus tackles the familiar and modern themes of family, brotherhood and sisterhood, that Cattleya is renowned for doing so well.”

David Jenkinson, editor-in-chief & managing director of C21Media, added: “We are delighted to kick off our first Digital Premieres Season – which is designed to allow distributors to showcase new programming to the world in a safe, protected environment – with Romulus. While we know Rome wasn’t built in a day, we hope C21 Digital Screenings will become an effective way to launch shows to the global content-buying community in the new normal future.”

Romulus is written by Filippo Gravino (Italian Race, Alaska, Fiore, The First King), Guido Iuculano (A Quiet Life, Tutto Può Succedere, A Stroke of Luck, Alaska) and Rovere.

Rounding off the cast are Giovanni Buselli (Gomorrah, My Brilliant Friend), Silvia Calderoni (Bloody Richard), Sergio Romano (Il Campione, La Terza Stella), Demetra Avincola (Lucky, Loro 2), Massimiliano Rossi (The First King, The Vice of Hope,) Ivana Lotito (Gomorrah) Gabriel Montesi (Made in Italy, The First King, Il Campione) and Vanessa Scalera (Lea).
