Richard Tulk-Hart exits Buccaneer Media, sets up scripted consultancy business

Richard Tulk-Hart, the former joint CEO of Buccaneer Media, has launched his own consultancy business with a focus on scripted pre-sales and international coproductions.

Richard Tulk-Hart,

Volteo Media has been set up following Tulk-Hart’s recent departure from Buccaneer Media after nearly six years, during which he played a key role in setting up seven series.

These include Whitstable Pearl (Acorn TV), Irving Welsh’s Crime (ITV), In Flight (Channel 4) and The Doll Factory, The Burning Girls and The Crow Girl, all for Paramount+, as well as international copro So Long Marianne (NRK/ITVX).

With a focus on scripted content, Volteo Media will provide consultancy on individual projects, entire slates, and executive producer services, with a particular specialism in pre-sales and international coproductions.

Tulk-Hart said the company has been created to offer flexible, tailored support to production companies navigating the challenges of the current media landscape, as well as finding opportunities in emerging spaces such as vertical video content.

The exec said is in discussions with “major brand agencies” to help bridge the funding gap in the latter space.

Tulk-Hart said he will use his extensive global network to help clients finance and set up shows in an increasingly fragmented market.

Prior to Buccaneer Media, Tulk-Hart held roles including MD of international distribution, formats and coproductions at A+E Networks; senior VP and head of international at Miramax; VP of sales for EMEA at Fremantle Media; and VP of sales and distribution at IMG Media.

His first client is Buccaneer Media itself, where he will continue to advise on its slate.

“The old commissioning and financing models are no longer fit for purpose,” Tulk-Hart said. “There’s an opportunity right now to work across companies and borders to help get ambitious projects made without adding permanent overheads to businesses. That’s exactly where Volteo Media comes in.

“There’s a real shift happening. The necessity for multiple partners on a show is now the norm, not a nice-to-have. I’ve been working in that space for years and I know how to bring the right people together.”
