Rakuten TV runs with NSN’s Transvulcania ultramarathon documentary

The Transvulcania is one of the world’s hardest ultramarathons

European video-on-demand service Rakuten TV has added a feature documentary about the iconic long distance trail running event Transvulcania to its slate of exclusives.

Produced by NSN and directed by Marc Barceló, Transvulcania: The People’s Run will be available for free and exclusively in 42 European countries, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and the Nordics.

Set to launch on November 12, it centres on the long-distance race that is held annually on La Palma, one of the western Canary Islands. It is considered one of the hardest mountain-ultramarathons in the world and one of the most important in Spain.

Through the stories of athletes and local residents, the documentary explores how the race has united a community since its first edition in 2009, becoming a symbol of triumph and belonging.

Documentaries as well as new reality formats and branded content partnerships are a priority for Barcelona-based Rakuten TV’s original content team, while the streamer also needs true crime and lifestyle programming for its 100-plus FAST channels, its European head of original content Daniel Gilgado told C21 earlier this year.
