Protagonist enters ring with Kings

Roberto ‘Hands of Stone’ Durán in 1973

MIPTV: London-based distributor Protagonist Pictures is presenting a new docuseries about boxing from the producer of feature documentaries Amy and Senna at MipTV this week.

The Kings is a four-part project from James Gay-Rees, producer of the acclaimed docs about singer Amy Winehouse and racing driver Ayrton Senna respectively, plus Paul Martin (Maradona) and Fiona Neilson (Supersonic).

Made by Gay-Rees’ Box To Box Film in association with London’s Ingenious Media, the series covers the four boxers who vied to be the best in the world after the retirement of Muhammad Ali in 1981 – ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard, Roberto ‘Hands of Stone’ Durán, Thomas ‘Hit Man’ Hearns and ‘Marvellous’ Marvin Hagler.

Originally made for Viacom-owned US pay channel Showtime, where it will premiere in June, The Kings is available for international acquisition at the digital version of MipTV this week.

Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, said: “Set against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent and fascinating periods of modern US history, The Kings is a must watch docuseries for both serious boxing fans and those completely unfamiliar with the sport. We can’t wait to discuss and share exclusive footage from this incredible show with buyers from around the world.”
