Plimsoll picks Smith for Wales launch

UK-based factual indie Plimsoll Productions is preparing to open a Wales office and has promoted one of its execs to oversee it.

James Smith

Plimsoll Wales will launch in autumn and will be headed up by James Smith, who is already working with his team on two series to be produced by the Cardiff-based unit. Details of the show are being kept under wraps.

Smith most recently served as an executive producer at Plimsoll’s Bristol office, overseeing specials and live events, including Plimsoll’s Earth Live for National Geographic.

Before joining Plimsoll in 2015, Smith ran Springwatch for BBC2 and was part of the Cardiff-based team that made Amazon with Bruce Parry and produced anthropological series Tribe.

Plimsoll, which was launched by former Zodiak USA chief Grant Mansfield in 2013, already has offices in Bristol in the UK and in LA, and has produced more than 40 series for both domestic and international networks.

Its slate includes ITV primetime series Teach My Pet to Do That and an adaptation of Channel 4 show Rescue Dogs to Super Dogs for Animal Planet in the US.

Mansfield said the Cardiff office “is an obvious expansion of our commitment to out-of-London production, tapping into the creative talent base that has grown up there, including Bafta winner James Smith.

“With his long association with Wales as a producer and resident, we have the perfect leader to establish and build a permanent production base in Cardiff.”
