Planet Earth II

Planet Earth II comes a decade after the critically acclaimed Planet Earth

More broadcasters in Europe and Asia have pre-bought forthcoming BBC natural history series Planet Earth II, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Radio & Television Slovakia, Telefonica in Spain, Poland’s TVP and Japanese broadcaster NHK have all signed up for the series, which comes a decade after the critically acclaimed Planet Earth, which was sold into more than 230 territories.

Coproduced by BBC America in the US, Germany’s ZDF and France Télévisions, Planet Earth II will premiere at Mipcom next week, where it leads BBC Worldwide (BBCWW)’s natural history slate.

The series has already been pre-sold to Swedish pubcaster SVT, DR in Denmark and Mediaset in Italy and will also be shown on BBC Earth channels in South Africa, the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe and Poland.

In related news, BBCWW has made sales to Channel 1 in Russia and Viacom in CEE. The Russian net has acquired the new series of drama Sherlock, which will air simultaneously with its UK premiere next year.

Viacom has agreed a 200-hour deal in CEE that consists of drama, comedy and factual entertainment titles including Top Gear and How Not to Live Your Life.

Meanwhile, AMC Networks International Central Europe has also added almost 90 hours of natural history, science, history, lifestyle and cookery titles, which will air on Spektrum, TV Paprika and Spektrum Home across the region.

Programmes include Rick Stein’s Long Weekends, Hemsley & Hemsley: Healthy and Delicious, Bargain Hunt, Shark, The Hunt and Colour: The Spectrum of Science.
