PBS links with Walter Presents

Danish drama Norskov will be among the titles on PBS’s Amazon channel

US public broadcaster PBS has linked with international drama streamer Walter Presents to offer the latter’s library of non-English-language programming via Amazon.

Walter Presents has agreed a deal with PBS Distribution to make more than 300 hours of drama available to Amazon Prime members on the PBS Masterpiece channel on Prime Video Channels.

It will launch on October 19 and will cost US$5.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. Additionally, select titles will be chosen by PBS for broadcast on PBS stations and streaming on the pubcaster’s on-demand service PBS Passport.

Walter Presents launched as an SVoD service in the US in early 2017, having originated in the UK via a joint venture with commercial public broadcaster Channel 4 in January 2016.

The service is personally curated by Walter Iuzzolino, featuring series ranging from Nordic thrillers to French political dramas, all with English subtitling.

Among the shows available via the PBS Masterpiece channel on Amazon will be Norskov, TV2 in Denmark’s drama about a police officer who returns to his provincial hometown; Belgian crime series 13 Commandments, which follows a modern-day Moses who commits gruesome crimes; and Belgian detective series Professor T, about an eccentric criminal psychology genius who reluctantly becomes a police advisor.

PBS Distribution is known for bringing popular English dramas including Downton Abbey, Poldark, Victoria, Endeavour, Inspector Lewis and Grantchester to US audiences.

“PBS Distribution has always offered the best British dramas. Expanding our Prime Video Channel to include the best of foreign-language dramas is a natural fit, giving our subscribers access to premium international series. Walter Presents will deliver hand-selected global hits to our audience,” said Andrea Downing, co-president of PBS Distribution.

Walter Presents is a joint venture between Channel 4 and Global Series Network, founded by Jason Thorp, Iuzzolino and Jo McGrath. It launched in Australia through pay TV service Foxtel in November 2017 and in Italy in September 2018. It is also available in mainland Europe via Discovery’s Nove, Giallo and Dplay channels.
