PBS Kids, CBC, Sky Kids to collar reboot of Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford the Big Red Dog was last adapted for TV in 2019

Production has started on a reboot of animated series Clifford the Big Red Dog, commissioned by US public broadcaster PBS Kids, the CBC in Canada and Sky Kids in the UK.

The 26×11’ preschool series is being produced by 9 Story Media, with Brown Bag Films animating and will premiere next year. It will be accompanied by an interactive game, designed to extend social skill development for preschoolers.

Clifford the Big Red Dog centres on a young girl and her giant canine best friend, who turns small problems into oversized adventures. It is based on Norman Bridwell’s books, published between 1963 and 2015, which were adapted into an animated series in 2000 and then again in 2019.

Over the years, there has also been a spin-off series, called Clifford’s Puppy Days, and a feature film.

The rebooted series is written by Jason Hopley and directed by Cory Bobiak. 9 Story holds the worldwide distribution rights.

“Clifford has been a favourite with children and families for generations, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this big red dog to PBS Kids audiences across the country,” said Sara DeWitt, senior VP and general manager of PBS Kids and Education.

“Giving kids the skills, knowledge and encouragement they need to connect with others and sustain relationships is more vital than ever to prepare them for success in school and life.”

Vince Commisso, president and CEO of 9 Story and executive producer on the series, said: “With this next chapter, we’re leaning into a more comedic approach that amplifies the scale and playfulness of Clifford, while staying grounded in the warmth and emotional connection audiences have always loved.”
