PBS, C4, Arte team for 9/11 legacy doc

Broadcasters PBS in the US, Channel 4 in the UK and Arte in France have jointly commissioned Generation 9/11, a feature documentary that looks at the fallout from the terrror attacks 20 years on.

Made by UK factual prodco Arrow Pictures, the film meets some of the 108 children who were unborn when they lost their fathers in the September 11 attacks.

PBS International will distribute the two-hour documentary, which will also be available as two one-hour episodes. The film is being produced by Arrow’s Lucie Ridout.

Arrow and creative director John Smithson have made 9/11 documentaries before, namely 9/11: Phone Calls From the Towers (1×90’ for Channel 4) and 9/11: The Falling Man (1×90’ for Channel 4/Discovery Channel).

Smithson said: “We have made a number of films about 9/11 but they have all focused on the day itself. What’s exciting about this project is having the opportunity to examine life in the wake of 9/11, through the eyes of the children who have all been uniquely shaped by the tragedy. Having the backing of three significant and equal partners through both the development and commissioning process has fuelled our creative ambition for this film.”

Tom Koch, VP of PBS International, said: “It is unique for three broadcasters to sit down and agree on a story at the start. We all felt that following the lives of these children growing up in a post-9/11 world would give an incredibly important perspective on the last 20 years. We look forward to sharing their stories in Generation 9/11 with the global audience.”

In February, Arrow and Australia’s Stranger Than Fiction Films announced they were coproducing feature doc Rivers, about the world’s great waterways, for the BBC and ABC down under.
