Paramount+ plans to commission 150 international originals by 2025 as its expansion continues with launches in the UK and Ireland this week.

The streamer’s latest commissions from markets such as France, Germany, Italy and Mexico include Sinaloa’s First Lady, One Must Die, Murder of God’s Banker, The Sheikh (Der Scheich), A Thin Line, MASK: Marie Antoinette Serial Killer and Circeo.

The commissions come in advance of Paramount+’s expansion into the UK and Ireland this Wednesday, Italy in September and Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France in December.

Paramount Global described them as a “first step” towards the streamer’s plan to commission 150 international originals by 2025 as it looks to invest in internationally originated content outside of North America.

The originals will be produced in partnership with VIS, Paramount’s international studio, which is a division of the company’s worldwide studio footprint that spans more than 20 countries.

They join a slate of existing or forthcoming Paramount+ originals such as UK shows Sexy Beast and A Gentleman in Moscow; Germany’s The Chemistry of Death; Mexico’s Los Enviados (The Envoys), Cecilia and At Midnight; French duo The Signal and Impact; Spain’s Bosé; and Fallaci from Italy.

The service is currently live in the US, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Nordics, Australia and South Korea.

Among the non-North American original projects are the aforementioned Murder of God’s Banker, a four-part docuseries produced by CreativeChaos in association with VIS that recounts the murder of Italian fugitive banker Roberto Calvi, whose body was found hanging from a London bridge in 1982.

MASK: Marie Antoinette Serial Killer, meanwhile, is an eight-hour young-adult fantasy horror thriller created and developed by executive producers Beth Tapper and Mitch Watson. Based on Katie Alender’s novel Marie Antoinette Serial Killer, the series is produced by France’s Cottonwood Media and VIS.

In Germany, Paramount+ is making A Thin Line with Weydemann Bros Serial Drama in association with VIS; and The Sheikh (Der Scheich), with X Filme Creative Pool and VIS.

Out of Italy comes Circeo, which tells the story of the aftermath of the crime that came to be known as the Circeo Massacre. It will be produced by Cattleya in partnership with VIS for Paramount+ and Rai in Italy.

In Mexico, Paramount+ is developing Sinaloa’s First Lady, produced by VIS in association with Braven Films, and One Must Die, a suspense thriller movie that centres on seven people who are kidnapped and suddenly find themselves part of a deadly game. It is produced by VIS in association with 11:11 Films.

Marco Nobili, executive VP and international general manager of Paramount+, said: “Paramount’s story began with the longest-running studio in Hollywood, and today we span the globe with our worldwide production studios that create hits for audiences around the world, which now live all in one place: Paramount+.

“As the service continues to expand internationally, there’s a great opportunity for content to travel globally, opening up a world of opportunities for talent and creators as we plan to commission 150 international originals by 2025, while delivering incredible value to subscribers on Paramount+.”
