Streamer Paramount+ lands in Italy with local commissions, US star power

Legal drama Circeo is among the Italian content on Paramount+

Global streamer Paramount+ arrives in Italy today, with local originals starring the likes of Roberto Benigni, Elodie, Greta Scarano and Carlo Verdone.

The global streaming service from Hollywood studio Paramount enters the Italian market with more than 8,000 hours of entertainment, the company said at a star-studded event in Rome yesterday.

Among the locally commissioned series on the platform are Francesco Il Cantico, described as “an immersive reading of one of the most iconic texts dedicated to love, hosted by Oscar-winning Italian star Roberto Benigni.”

The services also has a new season of Vita Da Carlo, directed by and starring Italian comedian and actor Carlo Verdone; Miss Fallaci, about the controversial Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci; and Ti Mangio Il Cuore, a film based on Carlo Bonini and Giuliano Foschini’s investigation of the Mafia in Foggia.

Previously announced scripted originals include Bosé, a six-episode series about the life of 1970s singer Miguel Bosé. Other Italian content includes legal drama Circeo, from Cattleya, VIS and Rai Fiction; Ivan Cotroneo’s Quattordici Giorni; and teen-drama thriller Corpo Libero (aka The Gymnasts), from Indigo Film and Network Movie, in coproduction with Germany’s ZDFneo, in collaboration with Rai Fiction and All3Media International.

The platform will also air local versions of MTV unscripted formats Ex on the Beach and Are You the One?.

Tulsa King star Sylvester Stallone was at the Paramount+ launch in Rome yesterday

This local content will be combined with other Paramount+ originals, such as Tulsa King, The Offer, 1883 and Halo, plus series and movies from Paramount’s brands and production studios, including Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, Showtime and Smithsonian Channel.

The Italian launch comes after Paramount+ arrived in the UK and Ireland in June and follows its debut in the US, Canada and Latin America last year. The service is also available in the Nordics and Australia, and via local third-party partnerships in South Korea, MENA and India, among other territories.

“Italy has been a home to Paramount for many years and now we’re bringing the best Italian – and global – films and series together in one place, on Paramount+,” said Tom Ryan, president and CEO of streaming at Paramount, at the event last night.

“We’re the only streaming service where you’ll see Sylvester Stallone, SpongeBob, Star Trek, South Park and incredible Italian stars like Elodie and Verdone… all in one place,” added Marco Nobili, executive VP and international general manager of Paramount+.
