NRK breaks the last Taboo with greenlight for daring comedy format

NRK in Norway has commissioned a local language adaptation of edgy Belgian comedy format Taboo.

To be produced in-house by the broadcaster, the format sees a famous comedian test the boundaries of good taste by telling jokes centred on subjects considered too taboo to laugh at.

The twist is that the stand-up routine will be performed in front of those directly affected by it, with topics including obesity, physical disabilities and terminal illness.

Originally created by Belgian prodco Panenka (Switch), Taboo launched on VRT and is hosted by comedian Philippe Geubels. It has now been adapted in nine territories, including Spain (TV3), Australia (Network 10), Finland (MTV) and Portugal (SIC).

The deal with NRK was secured by Amsterdam-based sales house Lineup Industries, which distributes the format rights.

Eirik Sandberg Ingstad, executive editor of entertainment at NRK, said: “In an age where freedom of speech, humour and public discourse are constantly being negotiated, Taboo offers a rare space for nuance, empathy and connection.”

Julian Curtis, founder at Lineup Industries, said: “Taboo is thought-provoking and compelling entertainment and the deal with NRK and the continued recommissions across other territories underscore that this is a hugely important topic for broadcasters that continues to resonate with audiences.”
