Nippon greenlights Mute It! special

Mute It! was launched to international buyers in April

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV has ordered a two-hour special of its gameshow format Mute It!.

Mute It!, which usually runs in 30-minute slots, premiered on Nippon TV last November before moving to a primetime slot in March this year.

The format rights to the series were made available to international broadcasters in April.

Created and produced by Nippon TV, Mute It! puts participants through four stages of challenges as they attempt to win a cash prize. However, they are not allowed to make noise while doing so, with contestants being disqualified if they make a sound louder than 50dB.

The two-hour special will launch during the show’s primetime slot on Friday.

Fusako Nagashima, head of formats, international business development at Nippon TV, said: “Since the original airing, Mute it! has far exceeded our expectations – not just here in Japan, but around the world with the interest that this unique gameshow format has been generating.

“We are excited to be unveiling this two-hour special with new themes including pirates, treasure island, secret caves and jungles, and we are certain that Mute it! will continue to grasp attention from buyers looking for a fun studio gameshow format.”
