Newen buys into Spain’s Kubik Films

French broadcaster TF1’s production and distribution outfit Newen is continuing its European expansion by taking a minority stake in Spanish production house Kubik Films.

Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo

Kubik Films was founded by brothers Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo in 2016 and its first show was La Zona for Movistar+, which later aired on Starz, Canal+ in France, ZDF in Germany, Amazon Prime Video Italy and in several other European countries and in Latin America on HBO.

It is the latest acquisition by Newen, which secured a majority holding in Spanish production group iZen last month.

To date, Newen has acquired stakes in Canadian producer and distributor Reel One, Danish producer Nimbus Film (The Bridge), Netherlands-based Pupkin and Tuvalu, and Belgian prodco De Mensen (Undercover).

Last year, it also launched UK prodco Ringside Studios alongside former Channel 4 head of drama Gub Neal, after Newen opened a London office in 2017.

Newen MD Romain Bessi told C21 last month that the next stage in the firm’s strategy is to buy a prodco in a new European territory.

Philippe Levasseur, head of international at Newen Group, said: “Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo’s integration in our teams gives Newen a new burst of creativity. They are multi-talented writers, directors and producers, and their team spirit matches exactly with our vision of Newen.”

The Sánchez-Cabezudo brothers said in a statement: “The collaboration with Newen allows us to take on ambitious projects with a decidedly international vocation in a market that is increasingly globalised for Spanish productions. We are perfectly aligned with the Newen team in the objectives we want to achieve and the stories we want to tell.

“We are committed to fiction entertainment with content and meaning for different broadcasters and platforms, for stories that will touch on different tones and genres with the aim of always being identifiable with our seal Kubik Films. We look forward to joining these great teams”.
