New Movistar Plus+ management team orders three original drama series

The Movistar Plus+ team and the creators of its three new original dramas

Movistar Plus+ in Spain has ordered three original drama series, the first since the Spanish platform’s recent leadership change.

At a press presentation held on Thursday in Madrid, new director of fiction and partnerships, Jorge Pezzi, said under his leadership the strategy will be to make “more incredible, distinctive, high-risk projects.”

“The change will mean doing more, not doing things differently,” he said. “We are firmly committed to continuing to be a beacon of Spanish talent and a focal point for the Spanish industry. To be the home where talent wants to be.

“I want to thank [former content director] Domingo Corral for all the work he’s done and for the wonderful legacy I’ve inherited. And I also want to thank the team, because without them I wouldn’t be here right now,” said Pezzi, six weeks after taking office.

Susana Herreras, editorial manager of original series at Movistar Plus+, introduced the new projects launching this year, accompanied by their creators.

Brothers Jorge and Alberto Sánchez Cabezudo (The Zone, See You in Another Life) presented Matar a un oso (Killing a Bear), a series based on the real-life death of bear Cachou in the Aran Valley, in the Pyrenees, and the unprecedented criminal investigation it triggered. Kubik Films, the Sánchez Cabezudo family’s production company, will begin filming the six episodes in August.

The second project is from Isabel Peña (Antidisturbios, Apagón) and Eduardo Villanueva (Antidisturbios), and adapts the book El proxeneta by Mabel Lozano, who is coproducing the as-yet-untitled series with Caballo Films. Elena Martín Gimeno (Creatura) and Sandra Romero (Por donde pasa el silencio) will direct the series, which delves into the prostitution business in 1990s Spain from three different perspectives.

Following the success of her first series, Querer, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa revealed she is preparing her second series for Movistar Plus+, which she will co-write with Eduard Sola. Without revealing too many details, the creator said the story will explore the world of “OnlyFans-type platforms,” which are “challenging the traditional perception of online pornography and sexuality.” The new series, still untitled, will be produced by Kowalski Films and Feelgood Media.
