At the See What’s Next event the US company held in Rome today, Netflix executives claimed that the fresh original content confirms its commitment to the Italian creative community.
The titles all take inspiration from Italian intellectual property, with many adapted from best-selling books and real-life stories.
The first series announced is Storia Della Mia Famiglia by Claudio Cupellini (A Quiet Life, Lessons in Chocolate), which is about the last day of the central character’s life. The show is written by Filippo Gravino and Elisa Dondi with Mediawan-owned Palomar Film & TV producing.
The second series, Adorazione, is created and directed by Stefano Mordini and is a young adult series loosely based on the novel of the same name by Alice Urciuolo. It tells the story of a group of teenage girls and boys during a summer destined to change their lives.
The series is written by Donatella Diamanti, Giovanni Galassi, Tommaso Matano, Francesca Tozzi and Gianluca Gloria with production going via Picomedia, part of Asacha Media Group.
No details of the transmission schedules have been released at this stage.
Netflix also announced two new feature films: Il Treno dei Bambini, adapted from Viola Ardone’s bestseller about a child in post-war Italy torn between two mothers; and Fabbricante di Lacrime, inspired by Erein Doom’s novel.
Tinny Andreatta, VP of Italian content at Netflix, said: “We remain committed to our investment in Italy and Italian stories with conviction, continuing our long-term commitment to the country and its creative community.
“They are courageous stories because they talk about controversial and provocative topics; they are unique stories, which, put together make a rich mosaic that speaks to different audiences and different needs to find entertainment, curiosity and provocation.”
The four new commissions join other recently announced additions to Netflix’s Italian programming slate, including Everything Calls for Salvation (S2), Rhythm + Flow Italy and The Law According to Lidia Poet (S2).
