Netflix to premiere Schumacher doc, renews fantasy drama Sweet Tooth

Christian Convery as Gus in fantasy Sweet Tooth

The Netflix documentary on former Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher finally has a premiere date of September 15 after a series of post-production delays going back to 2019 and the streamer has also renewed drama Sweet Tooth.

The film chronicles the driving great’s career in motorsport, using interviews with his family, Bernie Ecclestone and a host of F1 drivers to give a picture of the man who is still on the road to recovery after a severe brain injury suffered in a skiing accident in 2014.

The release has been delayed by Covid-19 and negotiations with the driver’s family, but the new premiere date coincides with the 30-year anniversary of Schumacher’s entry into F1.

Germany’s B|14 Film has made the doc, with Benjamin Seikel and director Vanessa Nöcker handling production. London distributor Rocket Science is handling sales.

Seikel said: “The documentary was a big challenge and needed a lot of time and sensitivity, considering the pressure that was put on the production from the outside. But thanks to a great team and a really great collaboration with the family, we didn’t let ourselves get rattled.

“We’re grateful that it’s finally getting underway and excited about its global release on Netflix. The film was always intended to be an international documentary and we’re confident it will be embraced as such.”

London-based Rocket Science is representing sales and distribution of the film worldwide and facilitated the partnership with Netflix.

In other news, Netflix has renewed drama Sweet Tooth for a second eight-episode season.

The first season dropped on the platform in June, and stars Christian Convery as a boy who is part-human, part-deer after a mysterious viral event led to some babies being born part-animal, for which they are now persecuted. The show sees the protagonist Gus travel across America with itinerant loner Jepperd.

The series is based on the DC comic of the same name, and executive produced by Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan for their prodco Team Downey along with creator Jim Mickle, Amanda Burrell and Linda Moran. Oanh Ly, known for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will join as a co-executive producer for season two.
